Coffee Talk: Following Through

This past weekend, I was in New York apartment hunting for the summer. We had been working with a broker to set up appointments to view apartments, and try to get one all set for the summer. He stood us up. I kid you not. He stood us up. As we were getting off the train at Grand Central, he told us he had not made any appointments for us (after over a month of talking, and him telling us he had everything setup, and sending us the listings…) He then said he would work to get it all set for the morning, and then never showed. You can imagine the panic that set in.

However, if there’s one thing my mom and I are not, it’s quitters. So, we made some last minute calls and emails, and on Saturday morning, we set out to find my summer shoebox apartment. My point of this is, always follow through. If you have made a commitment, no matter how small, you must always follow through and be professional. In today’s world, it is all about connections and making relationships with people, breaking any commitment or appointment can have even worse consequences down the road.

On the flip side, you always have to be flexible too. Plans change and people make mistakes, so always being able to find the silver lining in a situation and making it work is key to success.

When’s a time you have to be flexible?
