Guest Post : 5 Best DIY Holiday Projects That won’t break the bank

When the holidays come around everyone wants to have a festive home, but many store-bought decorations are expensive. You can make many different DIY holiday decorations within a reasonable budget. These decorations can range from a wreath for your door to ornaments.

DIY Tree Ornaments

Many inexpensive tree ornaments are not the most attractive, but you can make them this way. Buy several dollar store ornaments and then a few cans of spray paint in the colors that you want. Hang these somewhere you do not mind getting hit with paint. Then, just spray paint the ornaments. Make sure the space you are spray painting in is well ventilated. Once dry, simply hang these.

You can also use table salt to add a little “snow” to your ornaments. Once the paint is dry, put on a thin layer of glue and sprinkle salt on the ornaments.

DIY Stockings

Stockings can be pricey and many pre-made ones are just plain red. While there is nothing wrong with red, you can choose any pattern that you want if you make your own stockings. You can choose any fabric that you like. Once you have the fabric, you will take a pen or marker and draw the shape of a stocking on the fabric. Once this is drawn, cut it out and then use it to trace another stocking shape on the fabric. Then, you will cut this out and simply sew the two pieces together. You can also add a trim to the top with a different fabric by just sewing it on, as well as embellishments like bells.

DIY Yarn Wreath

You will need yarn in two to three different shades of green. The size of the balls should also vary in size. You will also need a few small ornaments (the colors are up to you), some thick ribbon, scissors, craft glue and a piece of cardboard. You will start by cutting the cardboard into the shape of a wreath. Next, take all of your yarn balls and glue them onto the cardboard. Be sure to vary the colors. Next, you will glue the ornaments randomly onto the yarn balls. Lastly, make a ribbon with your ribbon and glue it onto the yarn ball wreath.

DIY Frosted Candles

While silver and light blue candles look best with this, you can use any color. You will need candles in varying sizes, a cookie sheet, craft glue and Epsom salt. Gently paint on the craft glue. Be sure to use one that will dry clear. You only need a thin layer of this glue. You will coat the cookie sheet in Epson salt and then roll the candle through it. Allow the candle to dry standing straight up for at least an hour, or until dry. This makes candles appear frosted and snowy.

DIY Wall Hangings

If you like to hang holiday images up during this time of year, pull out last years holiday cards and pick up some inexpensive picture frames. You will just remove the front of the cards and place these into picture frames. You can also decorate the frames by painting them or even gluing holiday-related items onto them. Once the front of the card is framed and the frame is done, you can simply set these anywhere or hang them on any wall.
