One of the reasons I switched from being a pre-dental student, to being marketing and entrepreneurship, was for the creativity factor. I am someone who craves a challenge, and is always looking for the next thing I can teach myself. I knew I needed to have a career that allowed me to think creatively and constantly be challenging me. One of the things I have enjoyed most has been creating new ideas and solutions. However, I have also realized that it is not easy to be creative on demand.
There are many times where I have been stuck and can’t think of the next step or next thing to create. However, there are a few things that have helped me time and time again to get over this, hump, if you will.
The first is my white board. I have a small white board that I keep next to my bed, along with about 20 expo markers in varying colors and widths (necessary), for when I need to do a little brainstorming. I always like to start with a word of phrase that I am trying to convey. From there I keep writing or drawing, poorly drawing, anything and everything that comes to my mind. It usually ends up being a bit of a mashup, but it almost always seems to get me where I need to be.
The second is Pinterest. Like many others, I am pretty addicted to it. Sometimes I will go through my old pins on various boards to see what was inspiring me, or I will wade through some of my favorite pinners boards to see what inspiration I can pull from others. Other times I will search some of my favorite words and see what comes up or strikes my fancy.
My third and final creativity trick is to walk away. This seems counterintuitive, however, sometimes the worst thing you can do is stare at a problem for too long. Sometimes taking a break to grab a coffee, or hang out with friends is exactly what you need to reset your mind. Then, when you come back, you will be fresh and hopefully inspired to create something new.
